Update! Cecilia The Chimp, Has Been Given NonHuman Rights!

Great News! NonHuman Rights has been granted to Cecilia The Chimp, who’s been living in horrific conditions and in total isolation at the Mendoza Zoo in Argentina. The Mendoza Zoo is where Arturo, the Polar Bear, recently passed away, as a result of a sad life of cruelty and neglect.

The meaning of NonHuman Rights is to change the legal status of at least some nonhuman animals from that of property, to that of persons, with a goal of securing rights to bodily liberty (the right not to be imprisoned) and bodily integrity (the right not to be experimented on).

The NonHuman Rights Project is an organization run by Steven Wise, that works through state-by-state litigation in what is determined to be the most appropriate common law jurisdictions and bases its evidence on self-awareness and autonomy in nonhuman animals.

The NonHuman rights ruling by Maria Alejandra Mauricio, of the Third Court of Guarantees in Mendoza, Argentina, has given the order to move Cecilia the Chimpanzee from deplorable conditions at the Mendoza zoo, to the Sorocaba Ape Sanctuary in Brazil, where she will be much happier and healthier.

The Sorocaba Ape Sanctuary, near Sao Paulo, Brazil, is operated by the Great Ape Project and would help to rehabilitate Cecilia from a life of isolation, to a life surrounded by many other rescued Chimpanzees like her.

Judge Maria Alejandra Mauricio, also requested that members of the Mendoza Legislature “provide the relevant authorities with the necessary legal tools required to bring an end to the grave situation of captivity that sees the zoo animals living in unsuitable conditions — the African elephant, the Asian elephants, lions, tigers, brown bears, among others, and all of those exotic species that don’t belong in the geographical and climatic environment that is present in the province of Mendoza.”

The Mendoza Zoo should be held accountable for animal cruelty and neglect, for what happened to Cecilia, as well as Arturo the Polar Bear, who passed away in deplorable conditions at the Mendoza Zoo.

Please never support animals in captivity!
