Animal Save Movement Calls On New York City Mayor Eric Adams To Endorse The Plant Based Treaty

New York, NY - October 20, 2021: Eric Adams Democratic Party mayoral candidate greets supporters outside of NBC Studios before general election debates

As New York City continues to face increasing extreme weather events and sea levels rising due to climate change, Animal Save Movement is urging the city to formally endorse the Plant Based Treaty. The city has already pledged to take urgent action to confront the climate crisis, and by supporting this treaty, it would send a powerful message across the nation.

The Plant Based Treaty initiative is a grassroots campaign designed to create bottom up pressure for a global treaty in which a transition to a plant-based food system plays a critical role, alongside phasing out fossil fuels in combating the climate crisis.

By 2050, sea levels may rise up to 30 inches and average rainfall may increase as much as 13%. If climate change goes unabated, New York City can expect increased average temperatures and frequency of heat-waves that would change the livability of the city and put vulnerable populations at risk. The expected average temperatures in 2050 are projected to rise to 6.6°F (3.7°C) in the New York City metropolitan region.

“One thing for sure is that New York City is going to be one of the most healthy cities in the entire country. New York shares ideas, not only in the country, but in the world. So when we embrace plant-based food, it’s important that we do things in the right way,” said New York Mayor Eric Adams.

Animal Save Movement is also urging Mayor Eric Adams to send a letter to the President of the United States, strongly encouraging the federal government to support the global initiative for a Plant Based Treaty.

The Plant Based Treaty has 3 core principles:

1. Relinquish: Stop the problem from increasing. No land use change, including deforestation, for animal agriculture.

2. Redirect: Eliminate the driving forces behind the problem. Promotion of plant-based foods and actively transition away from animal-based food systems to plant-based systems.

3.  Restore: Actively heal the problem while building resilience and mitigating climate change. Restore key ecosystems and reforest the earth.

As a city that’s on it’s way to becoming a climate action leader, Mayor Eric Adams is already improving the health of kids by adding the groundbreaking Plant Powered Fridays initiative to Meat Free Mondays in the school system, as well as bringing healthy vegan food to hospitals and correctional facilities.

In addition, the city has expanded Active Lifestyle Medicine Services, Formalized their commitment to the Food Purchasing Program, increased fresh fruits and vegetables in the New York City pantry, and signed the C40 Good Food Cities Declaration to reduce meat consumption and food waste.

It is time for New York City to take the initiative to endorse the Plant Based Treaty and influence cities and countries to negotiate a global treaty to bring the food system into the 21st century.
