Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) is reportedly the latest fast food restaurant to beef up its menu with a plant-based alternative to one of its signature dishes.

The company announced that it will launch a nearly month-long trial run, beginning June 17th in the UK, of its Imposter Burger; a specially created Quorn burger that is coated in KFC’s classic blend of herbs and spices.

As per Quorn’s website, Quorn Mince uses 90% less land and produces 90% fewer carbon emissions than beef.

While KFC has its share of controversy regarding animal welfare, including sourcing chickens from factory-farms, the introduction of a plant-based option is a step in the right direction.

The Imposter Burger, which includes lettuce and vegan mayo, may be rolled out nationally following the results of its soft launch which ends on July 15th.

“A vegan KFC? We couldn’t believe it either. ‘But we’ve done it; while working with KFC, we have created a bespoke Quorn fillet that does the Colonel’s recipe justice,” noted Tony Davison, Head of Global Foodservice & QSR at Quorn. “We have no doubt that KFC fans are going to love the modern take on a finger licking favorite.”
