Breaking! Landmark Bill To Ban The Sale Or Manufacture Of Animal Fur Products In California Advances To The State Senate

AB44, a bill to implement a statewide fur ban in California, passed a crucial Assembly floor vote this week and will now advance to the Senate. The bill, authored by Assemblymember Laura Friedman, would make California the first state in the country to prohibit the sale and manufacture of animal fur products.

“No longer will wild animals die in cruel traps or live their lives in inhumane conditions just for our vanity. AB 44, which will prohibit the sale and manufacture of fur throughout CA, just passed the Assembly Floor,” Assemblymember Friedman posted on her Facebook page. “Now we need to make sure it is successful in the Senate and signed into law by the Governor. Let’s #MakeFurHistory by ending the fur trade.”

Sadly, coyotes, chinchillas, foxes, mink, rabbits, and other fur-bearing animals are subjected to unregulated killing methods which cause unimaginable terror and agony, all for the sake of frivolous fashion statements.

In Defense of Animals, one of the bill’s many advocates, also noted that fur from dogs, cats, raccoons, rodents and other animals are often undisclosed or intentionally mislabeled by manufacturers, and on fur products.

“Given the overwhelming evidence of inhumane practices in the fur industry, and the availability of so many different options for warm and fashionable fabrics, we will not continue to be complicit in unnecessary cruelty towards animals solely for the sake of fur,” Assemblymember Friedman said in a statement sent to WAN.

California has been on the forefront of anti-fur legislation with bans currently in place in San Francisco, Berkeley, West Hollywood, and Los Angeles.

A statewide fur ban in one of the country’s most populated and influential states would save millions of defenseless animals from horrific deaths, and would set a precedent for the rest of the country, and perhaps the world, to phase out the use of stolen animal fur for vanity and fashion.
