Breaking! R.I.P. Field Ranger Who Was Tragically Killed By Alleged Rhino Poachers In Kruger National Park

Tragic news from South Africa as WAN learns that a field ranger was fatally shot on Thursday while tracking poachers in Kruger National Park.

As per the South African Government News Agency, the field ranger and his colleagues reportedly made contact with a poaching group that they had been tracking, supported by the K9 unit.

Gunfire ensued and the ranger was severely wounded in the upper body. A doctor was flown in to try to stabilize him but the man whose identity is currently being withheld, succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.

“We would like to express our sincerest condolences to his immediate family, colleagues, and associates. Our prayers are with them during this difficult period,” CEO of SANParks, Fundisile Mketeni, shared in a statement. “It is never easy to cope with losing a loved one, especially in this manner.”

“We have lost a patriot who died on duty protecting South African assets and who was well trained to defend himself, hence our shock on learning of this incident,” continued Mketeni. “We will draw strength from his contribution to the anti-poaching campaign and as his colleagues, we are going to continue where he left off in honor of his memory,” Mketeni said.

With an estimated rhino population of 7,000, Kruger National Park remains the main poaching target in southern Africa.

The victim’s colleagues are reportedly receiving trauma counseling.

R.I.P. We may not know your name yet, but we know and will always appreciate your compassionate heart and the ultimate sacrifice you made in trying to protect the last remaining rhinos in South Africa.
