A Dog Nursing Kittens…It Doesn’t Get Much More Purr-fect Than That!

In a case of cuteness overload that will have you shedding sad-turned-happy tears, comes the real-life story of a young dog, appropriately-named Esperanza, which means “hope” in Spanish.

A proud member of the Pover family since 2010, Esperanza’s human mom shared her remarkable story with The Dodo.

“She’s been a blessing,” Pover said. “She’s a really special girl.”

The beginning to Esperanza’s story is a sad one; with a one-year-old dog, who had just given birth to puppies that were missing, ending up alone in a Mexican shelter.

But her time at the shelter took a positive turn when she began nursing a litter of newborn kittens that were in need of some life-saving milk.

Evi Pover explained how they were introduced to their newest family member while on vacation where they visited a local rescue group that had pulled Esperanza and the kittens from the shelter.

“As we were leaving, they asked if we’d like to see a dog who was nursing a litter of kittens,” she said. “There was an instant bond between Esperanza and my son, so we decided to adopt her.”

Pover arranged for Esperanza to join them in the United States, once she was done raising her appreciative little kittens.

“When she first came to us, she did not know what dog food or toys were,” continued Pover. “We had to teach her. Now she hoards her toys and loves to play.”

Now a veteran New Yorker, Esperanza rests easy knowing that the kittens have since been placed in loving homes as well.
