The Indonesian government is being urged to shut down the country’s cruel live animal markets, where each week thousands of live dogs and cats, mostly stolen pets, are brutally murdered and butchered for their meat.

Campaigners from the Dog Meat-Free Indonesia coalition filmed footage from two of the most notorious of Indonesia’s 200 live animal markets in North Sulawesi, “Tomohon Extreme Market” and Langowan Market, to expose the horrifying suffering routinely endured by animals.

In the heartbreaking video, live dogs and cats are captured trembling in cages as one by one they are beaten over the head, howling in pain.

As per the coalition’s website, every year, millions of dogs are brutally transported throughout Indonesia to supply the demand for dog meat. “They are crammed into cages and sacks so tightly that they can barely move, their mouths bound shut so they can hardly breathe.

The poor animals watch as others are gruesomely slaughtered, waiting for their turn.

“It was like walking through hell,”  Lola Webber, Dog Meat-Free Indonesia campaign coordinator said. “The sight of absolute terror in their eyes, the thumping of the club as they were bludgeoned, their screams of pain, and the smell of burning hair and flesh, were appalling and unforgettable.”

In addition to live dogs and cats, investigators witnessed the routine sale of slaughtered wildlife including illegally-caught species of bats, snakes and other reptiles.

The coalition has written to local and central governments of Indonesia, calling for urgent action to be taken. Despite requests for meetings with North Sulawesi provincial government numerous times, officials have so far refused to meet with the campaigners.

The Dog Meat Free Indonesia campaign is led by Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN), Change For Animals Foundation (CFAF), Animal Friends Jogja (AFJ) and Humane Society International (HSI).

Concern for animal welfare throughout Indonesia has also increased due to the growing awareness that the trade is incompatible with efforts to control and eliminate rabies, a deadly disease that has a devastating impact on human and animal health.

The dog and cat meat trade is cruel, dangerous and reprehensible.
