The Award-Winning Documentary “For The Birds” Opens In Theaters In New York May 31st & Los Angeles June 14th

The award-winning documentary FOR THE BIRDS will open in theaters in New York City on May 31st and Los Angeles on June 14th. Each city will enjoy week-long theatrical runs at IFC Center and Laemmle Monica Film Center. Directed by vegan filmmaker Richard Miron, the critically acclaimed film was shot in Hudson Valley and features the Woodstock Farm Sanctuary and the Ulster County SPCA.

For The Birds follows a woman whose love for pet ducks, chickens, geese and turkeys — 200 animals in total, draws the attention of local animal rescuers.

“When I started making this film, my initial plan was to tell a story about animal rescue and follow it from multiple viewpoints, says Miron. “But as the story took countless twists and turns over the next five years, it grew into something I never could have anticipated. The more I filmed, the more inspired I was to dig deeper into the human story behind the bird story.”

For The Birds has been lauded by film critics as “riveting,” “surprising” and “profound.” Allan Hunter of Screen International wrote, “A seemingly straightforward animal welfare case proves to be much more complex, a poignant documentary in which all the collateral damage is human.” Noah Gittell of Washington City Paper called the film “deeply humanistic” and “captivating,” stating that “the film’s greatest achievement may be how it methodically changes our perception of its protagonist.” Christopher Llewellyn Reed of Hammer to Nail called the film “observational cinema at its very best.”

For The Birds won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the New Orleans Film Festival and the Ridgefield Independent Film Festival, and has screened at over 20 film festivals around the world—including Hamptons International Film Festival in the ‘Compassion, Justice and Animal Rights’ program, DOC NYC, Woodstock Film Festival, Sheffield Doc/Fest, AFI Docs, and many more. The film is executive produced by Brian Reed, host and co-creator of the hit podcast “S-Town,” and Cindy Meehl, director of the award-winning documentary Buck. For The Birds will premiere in mid-July via digital platforms following its theatrical run.
