Politics and animal cruelty? That’s what the Wausau Possum Festival seems to represent in Florida. After we found out about this shocking so-called “festival”, we had to dig deeper.

On its website and Facebook page, the “festival” is promoted as one that “celebrates the Opossum, a nocturnal marsupial.”

Strange. While we’re still not completely sure what the festival is about and how it has existed for close to 50 years, the one thing that is clear from the photos is that there was an awful lot of manhandling of innocent animals by many people, including local politicians running campaigns during the 2018 election year.

At the appalling event, festival-goers had the opportunity to bid on an opossum, whoever bids the highest holds it by its tail and proceeds to shake the poor frightened animal in the air. We are just as shocked as you by now. This all takes place during the day, despite opossums being nocturnal animals. Being held captive in cages and then swung around by humans is unfathomable.

When threatened or harmed, opossums open their mouths, displaying 50 sharp teeth as saliva foams around them. This defense mechanism is an involuntary and automatic physiological response to danger.

According to the Tallahassee Democrat Congressional candidate, Bob Rackleff, bid an undisclosed amount while U.S. Congressman Neal Dunn reportedly paid $950.00 for an opossum.

Gubernatorial candidate Adam Putnam paid $600.00. Putnam even shared a photo of himself and his daughter holding the opossum on Twitter, which WAN opted against using in this article.

Claiming that “it’s for a good cause” as money raised benefits the local volunteer fire department and next year’s Possum Festival, commissioner of agriculture, candidate Denise Grimsley, paid $1,300.00 for her opossum.

This is sad and wrong on so many levels and the Possum Festival In Florida must end!
