The Great American Meatout, which intentionally falls on the first day of Spring, has been gaining momentum ever since it was started more than three decades ago.
Now recognized worldwide as “the largest annual education campaign for compassionate living,” The Great American Meatout, is designed to foster a national dialogue regarding the consumption of animal products, while enlightening people about the many health, environmental, and ethical benefits to be reaped by living cruelty-free.
According to Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM), which launched the campaign in 1985, “completely eliminating animal products from your diet saves 200 animals, 1.3 million gallons of water, and 53,000 square feet of rainforest annually”.
During The Great American Meatout, organizers in dozens of countries, encourage people to, symbolically, turn over a new dietary leaf, and give veganism a shot. It starts with one important day that, ideally, will turn into a lifetime.
FARM suggests a variety of activities for supporters wanting to sink their teeth into the day such as distributing vegan food samples and literature at local events and encouraging local restaurants to offer or feature their vegan specialties.
