A woman who started an animal rescue in Pendleton County, Kentucky, became overwhelmed when the number of pot-bellied pigs in her care grew to more than 400. She recently issued an urgent plea to help rehome all of the pigs on her property.

The state responded and seized 458 pigs from the farm; the majority of which are in distress and malnourished with an estimated 15 that are also pregnant.

“We met with the officers from Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife and they have given us a deadline of September 14th to place as many pigs as possible,” noted Kentucky-based Atti’s Acres, the original sanctuary heading up the rescue effort.

This is an urgent situation, any pig from the Kentucky 458 that is not placed by the September 14th deadline, will be euthanized by the state.

Cotton Branch Farm Animal Sanctuary in South Carolina is also among numerous local and national rescue organizations that are working with the state to save the lives of the precious pigs. Several members of its team have already arrived in Kentucky to help.

“This is the largest, most daunting, and most urgent seizure case we have ever worked on. 458 pigs need immediate placement. In order to place them in new homes, they must have health certificates and microchips, and they must be spayed and neutered,” the organization shared in a post on its Facebook page on August 27th.

More than six rescue organizations located in Kentucky, South Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Ontario, and several from North Carolina are also participating in the massive rescue effort including: Red Oak Animal Rescue-ROAR, Ziggy’s Refuge Farm Sanctuary, The Pig Preserve, Esther’s Army, Trew Love Rescue and Sanctuary, Changing Hearts Farm, and Pig Advocates League.
