Urgent! Help Stop Senseless & Appalling Wildlife Killing “Contests” In The United States & Worldwide

WAN and Peace 4 Animals believes that wildlife killing “contests” should be outlawed. A new contest that launched earlier this month is especially deplorable, it involves a three region challenge to “determine the best overall predator hunters from across the country.” Are they kidding?

There is an actual United States Predator Challenge website dedicated to killing predators for so-called “sport.” The first arm of the contest encourages participants to selfishly slaughter coyotes for “fun.” It took place December 7th and 8th in the Western region of central Utah. The second event, the Eastern U.S. championship, is scheduled to take place January 11th through the 13th in Virginia, with the Midwestern region rounding out the mayhem in Nebraska on February 1st and 2nd. Sickening.

The contest organizers stated on their website, “We want to stress the importance that to win one of these regional contests will be HUGE, and to win the overall Championship will truly set the bar in the predator calling world.” Another revolting statement by this organization.

Hunter, Daniel Wright of Wisconsin, boasts on the Made For Killing Website, “Over the years, my true passion has become predator hunting. At the end of the day, the real reason I love it is because there’s nothing that gets my blood pumping more then a group of coyotes getting all worked up and the anticipation of one popping out of the tree line into my crosshairs,” while 13 dead coyotes are pictured hanging behind him. “I can’t think of a better group of killers to be a part of.” He continued. How could anyone make such a horrific statement and be proud of killing innocent lives?

Project Coyote, which recently formed The National Coalition to End Wildlife Killing Contests, is urging animal advocates across the country to oppose this travesty, and sharing ways people can help END this for good on their website.

  • Urge your state legislators to support a ban on wildlife killing contests in your state. Locate your state legislators Here. Request that they support legislation to ban cruel and unsporting wildlife killing contests in your state.

  • Urge your city and or county council to pass a resolution condemning wildlife killing contests and calling for a statewide legislative ban. This year, the city councils of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Dewey-Humboldt, Arizona, passed similar resolutions.

  • Write letters to the editor of your local newspaper including the following talking points:

    • States should follow the lead of California and Vermont and ban the killing of coyotes and other wildlife for prizes and fun.

    • Wildlife killing contests are conducted for profit, entertainment, prizes, and simply for the “fun” of killing.

    • No evidence exists showing that indiscriminate killing contests serve any effective wildlife management function. Coyote populations that are not hunted or trapped form stable family groups that naturally limit populations. Indiscriminate killing of coyotes disrupts this social stability, resulting in increased reproduction and pup survival.

    • Coyotes play an important ecological role helping to maintain healthy ecosystems and species diversity.

    • Wildlife killing contests perpetuate a culture of violence and send the message to children that life has little value and that animals are disposable.

    • Wildlife killing contests put non-target wildlife, companion animals, and people at risk.

Contests such as this should not exist anywhere, and should be banned worldwide!
