James Middleton, Kate Middleton’s brother, is using his voice to advocate for animals. James currently has nine dogs, whom he credits with being his pillars of strength through difficult times. James recently announced the launch of his new foundation, the Paw Print Fund.
The purpose of his foundation is to provide financial and logistical support to other associations and charities working in animal welfare; many of which find themselves overwhelmed during this devastating pandemic.
“Who else is experiencing friendship, comfort, and unconditional love from their loyal pets during this difficult time?” Middleton shared on his Instagram page. “I want to give a big shout out to all our pets who our keeping us calm and helping us carry on.”
As per a statement on Middleton’s The Paw Print Fund crowdfunding page, 100%of the funds raised will go towards enabling dedicated animal welfare organizations to continue with their amazing work and also support pet owners who have been affected by COVID-19 and maybe struggling to look after their pets.”
Other countries which have gone into lockdown have seen a spike in the numbers of domestic animals abandoned as well. With shelters being closed for visits and re-homing, animal welfare organizations will be facing a crisis and need help more than ever.
WAN talked exclusively with Nick Daniels, Marketing Director for Dogs Trust about being named one of several animal welfare groups to receive assistance from thePaw Print Fund, as well as what their organization is currently experiencing during these trying times.
“We are extremely grateful to James Middleton for this gesture in these uncertain times, and to the overwhelming number of people who have offered their kindness and support for the dogs in our care. These are challenging times for everyone, and while we are coping at the moment, we do expect in the coming weeks that there will be an increased demand for our services. We are putting plans in place to ensure that we can help as many dogs as possible, and the money raised through The Paw Print Fund and through our incredible Dogs Trust donors will go a long way to help us limit the impact of this crisis on dog welfare.”
Like many other animal welfare charities, Daniels explained that they closed their rehoming centers for the time being and paused rehoming dogs to new families in accordance with Government guidelines.
“Our staff are busy looking after almost 1,400 dogs currently in our care, while limiting interaction with each other, we have found temporary foster homes for more than 260 dogs until the time comes when we can find them a forever home,” stated Daniels.
“Animals play such an important role in our lives and our pets will always be there for us in times of need,” concluded Middleton. “So, let’s be there for them. Any amount will be hugely appreciated.”
