A brave German Shepherd is being hailed a hero after he was beaten and shot several times while trying to protect his human teenage brother during a home invasion in Des Moines, Washington yesterday.

This morning, WAN talked to Curtis Krueger, a spokesperson for BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Renton where two-year-old Rex is currently being treated and is tentatively scheduled to undergo another surgery today.

“There were three bullet wounds to Rex, one in the neck, one in the right hind leg and one in the left hind leg. The bullet in the left hind leg caused a fracture to the tibia,” Krueger shared with WAN explaining that an original report that the bullet might have passed all the way through the left his leg proved not to be the case. “A BluePearl surgeon will repair the fracture, probably using a pin and screw, which is an operation called an internal fixation.”

Rex, who has been in the veterinary intensive care unit, receiving pain medication, antibiotics and wound care, with round-the-clock monitoring of his vital signs, is expected to remain in the hospital to recuperate.

According to a Go Fund Me page set up by a family member, the terrifying event unfolded after 16-year-old Javier Mercado who was home alone with Rex heard burglars shatter a glass door and enter the residence.

Seeking refuge in a bedroom closet, Mercado called 911.

In a profound display of a dog’s unconditional love, Rex confronted the burglars.

Bloodied and severely injured, when the perpetrators entered the room where Mercado was hiding, “Rex came out with the little strength he had left in him and threw himself at them.”

Unfortunately, upon hearing police sirens, the burglars escaped and have yet to be captured.

As of this morning, the Go Fund Me account has raised $29,955.00.

Rex’s medical treatment will be expensive so please donate if you can. His life and love are priceless!
