2. Los Angeles City Council Votes To Ban The Use Of Exotic Animals For Entertainment At Private Events And Parties

The Los Angeles City Council approved an ordinance led by Councilmember David Ryu to ban the exhibition of wild and exotic animals for entertainment purposes. The ordinance, which began as a motion in 2016, makes it illegal to bring wild animals to parties or use them for entertainment purposes.

UPDATE: This week, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti signed the legislation into law to ban wild animal acts in the city.

6. California Bill To Require Pet Microchipping Aims To Reduce Number Of Animals Euthanized In Shelters Throughout The State

The California Pet Microchipping Bill SB 573 will require local animal control agencies and public and private shelters to microchip all reclaimed or adopted cats and dogs.

More than 500,000 dogs and cats are brought into California shelters each year and more than half are euthanized. Only 15% of dogs and 2% of the cats in shelters without identification are ever reunited with their families.

The Animal Wildfire Evacuation Bill 2568 would establish protections for animals during emergency evacuations and wildfires in California. The bill would require an evacuation plan to accompany any jurisdiction that requires an owner to obtain a permit to keep animals over that jurisdiction’s legal limit.
