Take Action! Help Stop Yellowstone’s Bison From Being Gunned Down & Sent To Slaughter

Right now, iconic, wild bison—who have roamed this land for thousands of years—are being rounded up and killed in Yellowstone National Park. This is not “management.” It’s a killing operation that sacrifices wild animals for the interests of the cattle industry. Urge Montana Governor Greg Gianforte and Yellowstone Superintendent Cam Sholly to end this cruel plan and protect wild bison from slaughter today.

Over 630 bison have already been captured just inside Yellowstone’s boundary this winter. Chased down on horseback and held in pens, these individuals are being funneled to slaughterhouses—nearly 300 have been killed so far.

This carnage is part of the Interagency Bison Management Plan, now in its 30th year, enforced by Yellowstone National Park, U.S. Forest Service, APHIS, Montana Department of Livestock, and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

Montana is driving the killing, with an aggressive zero-tolerance policy for wild bison and an obsession with keeping the herd size capped at 3,000. The state is even suing Yellowstone National Park for attempting to raise that number to 5,000—still far below what the land can sustain.

This plan isn’t about balance — it’s about control. It’s about removing wild animals from their rightful home to protect the profits of an industry that already exploits cows for their flesh and lives. Wild bison are sentient individuals who deserve respect and freedom—not slaughterhouses and shackles. They belong in Yellowstone—not behind gates, not in transport trucks, and not in slaughterhouses.

Take action now to stop the mass killing of wild bison and demand an end to the Interagency Bison Management Plan.

It’s bad enough that Yellowstone’s bison have to worry about being gunned down if they step outside park boundaries. Call and send a letter urging Montana’s governor and Yellowstone officials to stop the capture and slaughter of wild bison and end their plan to eradicate these majestic creatures. Let’s protect our natural heritage.

1. Make Calls

Please call Yellowstone National Park Superintendent Cam Sholly and Montana Governor Greg Gianforte to politely urge them to stop the senseless killing of wild bison.

YNP Superintendent Cam Sholly: (307) 344-2002

“I’m calling to urge Superintendent Sholly to stop the roundup and slaughter of wild bison in Yellowstone National Park. I recognize the park faces pressure from the state, but Yellowstone should serve as a haven for these iconic bison. Please use your position to oppose this cruel plan and advocate for an end to the senseless slaughter of our national mammal.”

MT Governor Greg Gianforte: (406) 444-3111

“I’m calling to urge Governor Gianforte to stop pushing for a reduction in Yellowstone’s wild bison population. Forcing the herd below 3,000 threatens their genetic health and long-term survival. Wild bison are iconic animals who deserve protection. Please drop the lawsuit against Yellowstone and support a science-based, humane approach.”

2. Understand the Connection & Act Accordingly

By purchasing products like meat, dairy, wool, or leather from cattle and sheep ranchers, we contribute to the destruction of native wildlife including bison, wolves, and wild horses. Additionally, the very cattle and sheep we depend on are not spared. Despite our best intentions, these practices persist. Start a cruelty-free lifestyle today and make a difference.
