Wolves were once one of the most widespread and iconic species in North America. Over 2 million wolves once roamed freely across the continent, playing a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. But in the 20th century, they were nearly wiped out by relentless hunting, trapping, and government-sponsored extermination programs. By the 1960s, gray wolves had vanished from over 90% of their historic range in the contiguous United States.
Thanks to the Endangered Species Act (ESA), wolf populations began a fragile recovery, yet their existence still remains in peril. Presently, only an estimated 6,000 gray wolves remain in the lower 48 states. Despite these reduced numbers, thousands are still hunted annually—with countless others at risk due to anti-wolf legislation.
Representative Lauren Boebert’s anti-wolf bill, H.R. 845, is a direct attack on wolves and the laws that protect these precious species. This bill would permanently strip gray wolves of their federal protections, it would also block the public from ever challenging the law in court. No science. No oversight. No justice.
That’s why Team Wolf is launching Wolf Week of Action, a critical push to protect gray wolves and demand that lawmakers do the same. With Congress on recess and key decision-makers back in their home districts, now is our moment to be heard.
