Urgent Appeal! Austin Wildlife Rescue Is Seeking A New Location For Their Wildlife Intake Facility

Austin Wildlife Rescue (AWR) is making an urgent appeal to its community to help locate a new facility for its Wildlife Intake Center in Austin, Texas. AWR’s current lease will expire on November 30th, 2025, and will not be renewed. The organization must secure a new site to continue serving the Austin community and its wild neighbors. This year alone, AWR is expected to care for over 10,000 wild animals, most of whom are brought in by compassionate Austin residents.

The AWR Intake Center serves as a daily drop-off point for animals brought in by concerned citizens, Austin Animal Protection, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and other organizations. Each evening, the animals are transferred to AWR’s main Rehabilitation Center in Elgin for ongoing care and treatment. Importantly, no animals remain overnight at the Intake Center.

To meet operational needs, AWR is seeking a building within Austin city limits that offers at least 1,000 square feet of interior space and is situated on a minimum of ¼ acre to accommodate staff and parking. The property must either be zoned or be able to be rezoned for veterinary services, with no conditional overlays.

AWR is the only wildlife rehabilitation center in Austin with a dedicated intake facility. The organization plays a vital role in the community by providing expert care and rehabilitation for a wide variety of native wildlife species, with the goal of releasing healthy animals back into their natural habitats.

AWR operates under all required federal, state, and local permits and licenses, ensuring that its rehabilitation efforts meet the highest standards of professionalism and compliance.

In 2023, AWR successfully treated over 9,375 wild animals from more than 30 Texas counties, an 11% increase over the previous year. In 2024, that number rose even further, especially with the influx of coastal animals rescued during Hurricane Beryl.

During peak seasons, spring and summer, the organization typically has over 1,600 animals in their care at any given time. Additionally, AWR’s wildlife hotline (512-472-WILD) fields approximately 14,000 calls each year, providing the public with critical support, guidance, and referrals for wildlife-related concerns and emergencies.

Please help Austin Wildlife Rescue find a new home for their vital Wildlife Intake Center. This essential nonprofit organization plays a critical role in providing life-saving care to injured and orphaned wildlife throughout Central Texas.
