After 100 Years, A Wolf Returns To LA County: A Rallying Cry For Wildlife Protection
For the first time in over a century, a gray wolf has been documented in Los Angeles County, California. The young female wolf, known as BEY03F, was tracked in the mountains north of Santa Clarita earlier this month, marking a historic return of wild wolves to Southern California.
Peace 4 Animals and World Animal News have long advocated for the protection of wolves across North America. This historic sighting brings into focus why we began filming our newest documentary, Protectors of the Wild, three years ago, to amplify the plight of wolves and the threats they face, and to call for urgent action to protect them and restore the landscapes they once roamed.
Gray wolves historically ranged freely across North America, including California, where they were essential for maintaining a healthy and thriving ecosystem. By the early 1900s, they had been eradicated from much of the United States, including California, through hunting, trapping, poisoning, and habitat destruction. The last confirmed wild wolf in California was killed in 1924. The recent sighting of female wolf BEY03F in LA County is a powerful reminder that nature can reclaim what humans have taken from it, but only if we act quickly to protect it.
Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts and federal protections under the Endangered Species Act, wolves have slowly recovered in parts of the U.S., such as the Northern Rockies, the Great Lakes, and northern California, where their population has grown, though the species remains vulnerable.
Today, California is home to roughly 60 wolves, mostly in the northern and central regions, with no established packs in Southern California. This rare sighting offers a glimpse of hope, showing that even after a century of absence, wolves are beginning to reclaim parts of their historic range.
Wolves are a keystone species, essential to the health of our ecosystems. They maintain ecological balance and control prey populations. Yet they remain misunderstood and often vilified, creating conflicts with humans, particularly ranchers who view them as threats to their livestock.
Protectors of the Wild is a powerful documentary dedicated to the vital mission of safeguarding wolves in North America. Through breathtaking storytelling, the film explores the challenges wolves face, debunks myths that lead to their persecution, and highlights their irreplaceable contributions to the health of our planet. This historic sighting of BEY03F is exactly the kind of story the film seeks to bring to light, demonstrating that even after a century of absence, wolves are returning to their natural habitats and that our advocacy can make a major impact on the survival of their species.
Peace 4 Animals recently debuted the trailer for Protectors of the Wild, which was featured on the cover of Variety magazine, a landmark moment underscoring the power of storytelling and conservation.
The return of BEY03F is more than a rare wildlife sighting, it is a symbol of hope and a call to action. Wolves are reclaiming the landscapes humans eradicated them from, and it’s up to all of us to ensure they survive and thrive for future generations to come.
