The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is carefully evaluating the future of Patty, the Bronx Zoo’s last remaining elephant, as officials determine what they believe is the best path forward for the 57-year-old Asian elephant.

World Animal News reached out to the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), which operates the Bronx Zoo, regarding Patty’s future. In response, WCS provided WAN with an official statement outlining the organization’s ongoing evaluation and the factors being considered.

According to WCS, following the recent passing of Happy, Patty is now the Bronx Zoo’s only remaining elephant. The organization acknowledged the public’s concern about her future, stating that its primary focus is determining what is in Patty’s best interest.

The organization confirmed that its elephant care team is evaluating all appropriate options for Patty’s future, including the possibility of relocating her to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. WCS also confirmed that members of its elephant care team recently visited the sanctuary as part of that evaluation process. However, officials emphasized that no decision has been made.

According to WCS, every option is being carefully evaluated based on science, veterinary expertise, and Patty’s individual needs. Among the factors being considered are her age, health, behavioral history, the potential risks associated with transporting an older elephant, continuity of specialized veterinary care, and whether she would be compatible with and accepted by other elephants.

The organization noted that relocating an elephant of Patty’s age would require extensive preparation and training over many months, and that such a move carries both physical and psychological risks. WCS also explained that while elephants are highly social animals, companionship is only one aspect of elephant welfare, and each elephant’s circumstances must be evaluated individually.

The Bronx Zoo announced in 2006 that it would gradually conclude its elephant program while continuing to provide lifelong care for the elephants already living at the zoo. WCS said that commitment remains unchanged as it continues to invest in elephant conservation efforts across Africa and Asia.

For now, Patty remains at the Bronx Zoo while WCS continues evaluating what it believes is the best long-term plan for her future.

World Animal News and Peace 4 Animals believe Patty deserves the opportunity to spend her remaining years at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, where she could enjoy a spacious, natural habitat. After more than five decades at the Bronx Zoo, Patty deserves the serenity, space, and specialized care that a sanctuary can provide, allowing her to spend her retirement in peace.
