UPDATE (July 21, 2026): The injured bald eagle rescued in Big Bear Valley, believed by Friends of Big Bear Valley to be Jackie, Shadow’s longtime mate, continues to receive expert veterinary care at Ojai Raptor Center. Her condition remains critical.

According to Ojai Raptor Center, Jackie is underweight but remains alert. She is perching and eating with assistance while receiving supportive treatment from the center’s veterinary team.

Initial bloodwork shows Jackie is suffering from severe anemia and inflammation affecting her kidneys. Veterinarians are continuing to investigate the underlying cause, with additional bloodwork and diagnostic test results expected within the next couple of days. Ojai Raptor Center says it is still too early to predict the outcome.

The organization also shared that Jackie, identified as Adult Bald Eagle 26-519, arrived as a transfer from San Dimas Raptor Rescue after being found grounded and unable to fly.

A comprehensive medical evaluation remains underway, and Ojai Raptor Center says she is receiving outstanding veterinary care. The team is also grateful for the collaboration and expert guidance being provided by wildlife professionals from around the world as they continue evaluating and treating her condition.

Friends of Big Bear Valley also expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped protect Jackie before rescuers arrived. Concerned local residents and visitors stayed with her while trying to contact several agencies for assistance. After one individual reported the situation to the San Bernardino County Fire Station in Fawnskin, Captain Dennis Jones and his team responded, remaining with Jackie for several hours to protect her from other wildlife and human interference until the San Dimas Raptor Rescue team arrived around 2:00 a.m.

Friends of Big Bear Valley shared that Jackie truly had many angels watching over her—from visitors hoping to catch a glimpse of a bald eagle, to local residents, the fire department team, San Dimas Raptor Rescue, and everyone who helped ensure she reached expert medical care safely. The organization also expressed its gratitude to Ojai Raptor Center for providing Jackie with exceptional veterinary care.

Both Friends of Big Bear Valley and Ojai Raptor Center have asked supporters to follow their official channels for updates and kindly request that people refrain from calling, texting, or emailing, as it takes valuable time away from caring for Jackie and the many other birds of prey receiving treatment.

World Animal News and Peace 4 Animals are praying for Jackie’s full recovery and are deeply grateful to the dedicated veterinarians, wildlife rehabilitators, first responders, and everyone working tirelessly to save her life.

As Jackie continues receiving expert veterinary care, people around the world remain united in hope and prayer for this beloved bald eagle.
