Tragedy In New Mexico: Black Bear Dies After Becoming Stranded Atop Utility Pole
A black bear has died following a tragic incident involving a utility pole near Highway 56 between Clayton and Springer, New Mexico.
As 911 calls began coming in and vehicles gathered near the scene, former law enforcement officer Robin Dawson contacted emergency officials after spotting the bear stranded atop the utility pole.
According to Dawson, the 911 operator said she had already contacted the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and was reportedly told there was nothing officials could do. Dawson said the options discussed included shooting the bear or tranquilizing it to bring it down, but no wildlife response was initiated.
Given the seriousness of the situation, it is deeply concerning that no wildlife officials reportedly arrived to assess the bear or determine whether any intervention was possible.
Witnesses said the bear later died after being electrocuted before power to the line could be shut off.
The heartbreaking incident has renewed discussion about how wildlife emergencies involving animals in immediate, life-threatening situations should be handled and the need for stronger emergency response protocols.
Every wildlife emergency deserves prompt attention, careful assessment, and, whenever possible, every reasonable effort to help animals in distress and give them the best possible chance of survival.
