More Than 1,200 Wild Horses Face Removal In Federal Roundups Across The West

Federal roundup operations across Utah, Wyoming, and Montana could remove more than 1,200 wild horses from the public lands they call home.

According to American Wild Horse Conservation (AWHC), October removals are scheduled across the West. Current Bureau of Land Management (BLM) figures put the total at 1,268 wild horses.

Utah: Sulphur Herd Management Area

The BLM began gather operations in Utah’s Sulphur Herd Management Area on October 2, with approximately 300 wild horses slated to be removed from the range.

Wyoming: Red Desert Complex

In Wyoming, the BLM has scheduled a roundup at the Red Desert Complex from October 15 through November 20.

Approximately 1,035 wild horses are expected to be gathered. Of those, 931 are slated for removal, while 104 are planned to be returned to the range.

Montana: Pryor Mountains

The BLM’s schedule currently lists a bait-trap operation at the Pryor Mountains Wild Horse Range from October 1 through November 15, involving approximately 100 wild horses. Of those, 37 are listed for removal and 63 for return to the range.

AWHC reports that the operation is currently delayed. The BLM’s national schedule continues to list the October 1 through November 15 timeframe.

World Animal News supports keeping wild horses wild and free on the public lands they call home. Humane, non-lethal management should be prioritized to protect wild horse herds, preserve family bands, and end the need for large-scale removals.

World Animal News will continue following these federal wild horse operations and reporting updates as they develop.
