BREAKING: Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake Strikes Panama, Causing Damage And Injuries As Aftershocks Continue
A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Panama on Friday, October 9, 2026, causing significant damage, injuries, and evacuations as authorities worked to assess the destruction.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at approximately 12:56 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located about 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) west-southwest of Pitaloza Arriba, Panama, at a depth of approximately 7.8 miles (12.6 kilometers).
The earthquake was felt across Panama, including Panama City, and in neighboring countries such as Costa Rica and Colombia.
A second earthquake measuring magnitude 6.6 struck later Friday afternoon, as numerous aftershocks continued to raise concerns for affected communities.
Significant structural damage was reported across several provinces, including Coclé, Veraguas, Herrera, and Los Santos. Buildings, historic churches, and roads sustained damage, while residents evacuated homes, businesses, and public facilities.
Panama’s National Civil Protection Service (SINAPROC) reported several injuries, although an official total had not been released. No deaths had been confirmed as of Friday afternoon.
Following the initial earthquake, NOAA’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami-threat message for portions of the Pacific coastline across Central and South America, warning of potentially dangerous waves. The tsunami threat has since been lifted.
Emergency authorities continue urging residents to remain cautious, avoid damaged structures, and follow official safety instructions as aftershocks continue.
As Panama faces the aftermath of these powerful earthquakes, World Animal News and Peace 4 Animals urge everyone in affected areas to remember the animals who may also be impacted.
Natural disasters can leave companion animals, farm animals, and wildlife injured, displaced, or without access to food, clean water, and shelter.
If evacuation becomes necessary, please take your pets with you whenever it is safe to do so. Make every effort to protect farm animals and other animals in your care.
Animals depend on us for their protection, especially during times of crisis.
Our hearts and prayers are with the people and animals of Panama. May God watch over everyone affected, providing His protection, strength, and comfort during this difficult time.
