A beloved donkey named Angelique was tragically shot and killed by a hunter on October 11, 2026, while inside her enclosure at Hasty’s Haven, a nonprofit animal rescue and sanctuary in Belton, South Carolina.

The heartbreaking incident has devastated the rescue, where Angelique had lived for several years alongside three other donkeys who shared a close bond. The four animals had previously served as therapy donkeys for children with special needs before finding a permanent home at the sanctuary.

Hasty’s Haven expressed its grief over the devastating loss, sharing:

“This morning feels like a nightmare we can’t wake up from.”

According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), the hunter was on a neighboring property when he reportedly fired at a deer but missed, striking Angelique instead.

Following an investigation, the hunter was charged with negligent use of a firearm and hunting within 300 yards of a residence. The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with the investigation.

Known for their gentle and welcoming nature, Angelique and her companions were among the first animals to greet visitors at the sanctuary. The donkeys also participated in community educational events and activities with children and volunteers.

Angelique’s sudden death has left her caregivers heartbroken and raised serious concerns about the safety of rescued animals living near areas where hunting takes place.

Hasty’s Haven is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing horses, donkeys, ponies, and other equines who have suffered from neglect, abandonment, and abuse. The organization provides rehabilitation, compassionate care, and permanent sanctuary to animals in need.

The tragic loss of Angelique is a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating consequences that hunting can have on innocent animals and the people who dedicate their lives to protecting them.

World Animal News and Peace 4 Animals extend our deepest condolences to everyone at Hasty’s Haven and to Angelique’s surviving herd. She deserved to live her life in peace and safety, surrounded by those who loved and cared for her.

Rest in Heaven, sweet Angelique.
