An endangered female orangutan named Ira has been rescued from an area affected by devastating forest fires in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, raising renewed concerns about the growing threats facing the country’s endangered orangutans and their rapidly disappearing habitats.

The approximately 20-year-old wild orangutan, weighing just 28 kilograms (62 pounds), was found alive after reportedly being exposed to smoke from the fires. She has undergone a veterinary examination by personnel from Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) to assess her health and condition.

According to an update shared by Harie, who documented Ira’s rescue, the operation took place near Sampit, Central Kalimantan, through a collaborative effort involving Orangutan Foundation International, Indonesia’s Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), Amang Rimba Borneo, and dedicated volunteers working in the field.

Ira was first spotted by a local resident in a tree surrounded by fire-damaged forest, prompting an urgent response from wildlife authorities. As darkness fell, the rescue teams navigated difficult terrain, burned vegetation, and limited visibility to reach the endangered orangutan and bring her to safety.

Following the rescue, Harie expressed his appreciation to everyone who helped save Ira and shared a heartfelt message wishing her well:

“Selamat berkelana ditempat baru otan”

Translated into English: “Safe travels in your new home, orangutan.”

Forest fires continue to pose a serious threat to Indonesia’s endangered orangutans, destroying vital habitat, exposing wildlife to dangerous smoke, and forcing vulnerable animals from the forests they depend on for survival.

Ira’s rescue is an important reminder of the urgent need to protect Indonesia’s remaining rainforests and the endangered wildlife that call them home.

World Animal News and Peace 4 Animals extend our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated rescue teams who helped save Ira. We pray for her full recovery, an end to the devastating forest fires, and the protection of Indonesia’s precious orangutans.
