Breaking! New South Wales Bans Captive Dolphin Breeding; Next Step Is To Ban The Use Of Dolphins & Orcas For Entertainment

The Government of New South Wales (NSW) recently introduced a regulation to the Biodiversity Conservation Act that bans dolphin breeding and the importation of dolphins into the state.

World Animal Protection released a statement further explaining that in August of last year, Ben Pearson, the organization’s head of campaigns in Australia and New Zealand, appeared before the New South Wales upper house inquiry to introduce a regulation to ban captive dolphin breeding in the state.

“This regulation frees future dolphins from being confined to a life in lockdown at a time when the public acceptability of keeping dolphins in captivity for entertainment is declining,” stated Pearson. “As the tide turns against using marine mammals in captivity for entertainment, the conversation about what will happen to the dolphins at Sea World needs to start now. First step is a ban on further breeding.”

Sea World in Queensland (QLD) is now the only dolphin park in Australia to continue breeding dolphins in captivity. This must end!

According to a Sea World QLD-focused petition that was created to be sent to the Prime Minister of Australia Scott Morrison: “Dolphins can travel 160km in the ocean per day and dive up to 45m, an impossible thing to do if contained in captivity. This unnatural, cruel habitat is absolutely detrimental to the health and safety of dolphins.” The petition also reiterates that dolphins, “were not born to be trained for human entertainment while suffering in tiny, highly unnatural environments.”

While there is still more work to be done to end the exploitation of animals in captivity, World Animal Protection noted that Canada recently passed a ban on keeping dolphins, whales, and porpoises in captivity for entertainment. Another step in the right direction following Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, India, Luxembourg, Norway, Switzerland, and the UK.
