Call To Action! Canada Goose Is No Longer Selling Fur, Urge Them To Now Eliminate Cruel Goose Down From Their Apparel Line

As reported by WAN, Canada Goose committed to going fur-free by 2023, making it the perfect time to urge the outerwear company to also eliminate goose down to become a leader in animal and eco-friendly apparel.

The use of fur was strongly opposed due to the undeniably cruel and unsustainable practices of killing coyotes for fur trim.

“Our focus has always been on making products that deliver exceptional quality, protection from the elements, and perform the way consumers need them to; this decision transforms how we will continue to do just that,” said CEO and President Dani Reiss. “We continue to expand – across geographies and climates – launching new categories and products designed with intention, purpose and functionality. At the same time, we are accelerating the sustainable evolution of our designs.”

Goose down is the fluffy fibers under the outer feathers and closest to the birds’ skin, keeping them warm and protected. The ability of down feathers to insulate has led to widespread abuse and cruelty toward geese. To harvest their feathers, farmworkers roughly handle geese, who are held captive in small cages and in overcrowded facilities.

While fully conscious, terrified birds are restrained upside down, sat on, or forced into other positions to restrict their movement as they desperately struggle to break free. Their feathers are aggressively ripped from their bodies, leaving their skin raw and exposed. They often suffer large, agonizing wounds, which sometimes result in death, or they may receive shoddy, substandard treatment, including stitches from inept workers who are far from qualified to perform such veterinary procedures. Birds may endure this brutal process several times a year before they are callously sent off to slaughter.

The already horrifically cruel meat and foie gras industries also profit from the violent deaths of geese — once by selling their body parts for human consumption, and again for their feathers to be used as filling for jackets or bedding.

Goose down is the product of immense suffering. We applaud Canada Goose’s new fur-free policy, yet goose down is just as cruel and unsustainable as fur.

Using goose down does not in any way contribute to the company’s new goal to launch products that are “designed with intention” or that “accelerate the sustainable evolution” of its designs.

What you can do:

Please urge Dani Reiss, CEO & President of Canada Goose, to align the company’s new goals by switching to high-performing, synthetic goose down, or other sustainable and animal-free insulating materials to produce Canada Goose products.
