18-Year-Old Dies After Being Thrown From Runaway Horse-Drawn Carriage In Central Park

A tragic incident involving a horse-drawn carriage in New York City’s Central Park has claimed the life of an 18-year-old passenger, once again raising concerns about public safety and the continued use of horse-drawn carriages on the city’s busy streets.

According to reports, a family was riding in a horse-drawn carriage near Tavern on the Green when the horse suddenly became startled and bolted. Witnesses say the carriage raced through the area after the horse became frightened.

During the incident, the 18-year-old was thrown from the carriage and suffered critical injuries. The carriage later overturned.

He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries.

The heartbreaking tragedy has renewed concerns about the dangers horse-drawn carriages can pose not only to the horses forced to navigate busy city streets, but also to the many people who travel through and around Central Park each day.

The incident comes just a week after the death of Deniz, a 16-year-old carriage horse who collapsed and died near Central Park after reportedly ingesting Japanese yew, a highly toxic plant that can be fatal to horses.

In response to today’s incident, the Central Park Conservancy renewed its call to remove horse-drawn carriages from the park, stating:

“That this frightening situation is just days after the previous one underscores the dangers posed by horse carriages to Park visitors, carriage drivers, and the horses themselves. The Central Park Conservancy renews its call to ban carriages in Central Park as a matter of public safety and public health. We hope today’s injuries are the last we ever see.”

For years, animal advocates have argued that horses should not be subjected to the noise, traffic, construction, and unpredictable conditions of a densely populated city. They also warn that when horses become frightened, the consequences can be devastating for both the animals and the public.

As investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, advocates are once again urging city leaders to end the use of horse-drawn carriages and transition to humane alternatives.

This heartbreaking tragedy has left a family grieving the loss of their son and reignited a long-running debate over whether horse-drawn carriages belong in a modern urban environment.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the 18-year-old’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
