A dedicated team of volunteers stood watch over Rocky, an endangered Hawaiian monk seal, and her approximately three-week-old pup as fireworks echoed across Oahu on the Fourth of July.
Throughout the evening, volunteers monitored and protected the mother and pup while holiday crowds gathered nearby, helping ensure the endangered pair had the space they needed to nurse and rest during this critical stage of the pup’s development.
Their efforts came after repeated reports of disturbing behavior around the seals in recent weeks. Some people, including children, as well as unleashed dogs, were seen approaching the seals despite posted barriers. Volunteers also reported beer bottles, containers, and even phones being thrown at the endangered pair, creating unnecessary stress during this vulnerable time.
Hawaiian monk seals are among the rarest marine mammals on Earth. During the nursing period, which lasts only five to seven weeks, mothers and their pups are especially vulnerable to disturbance. NOAA urges the public to stay at least 150 feet away from mothers with pups, remain behind all posted signs and barriers, and never approach or attempt to interact with them.
If you witness a Hawaiian monk seal being harassed, disturbed, injured, or otherwise in danger anywhere on Oahu or throughout Hawaii, report it immediately to the NOAA Marine Wildlife Hotline at (888) 256 9840. Immediate reporting can help responders protect these endangered animals.
Fireworks can have a profound impact on wildlife, causing fear, disorientation, stress, and in some cases forcing animals to flee from their young or abandon critical habitat. For endangered Hawaiian monk seals, minimizing human disturbance during sensitive periods such as pupping season is essential to their survival.
World Animal News and Peace 4 Animals are deeply grateful to the dedicated volunteers who gave up their Fourth of July to help protect Rocky and her pup. Their compassion and commitment helped ensure this endangered pair had the space they needed to rest and nurse during one of the most vulnerable stages of the pup’s development.
