15 Elephants Die From Cyanide Poisoning In Kenya’s Amboseli National Park As KWS Investigates

A devastating wildlife tragedy has struck Kenya’s Amboseli National Park and surrounding ecosystem, where 15 elephants have died from cyanide poisoning over the past month, according to Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

Preliminary laboratory analysis detected traces of cyanide in samples collected from the elephants. KWS officials believe the poisoning is linked to agricultural chemicals and are examining nearby farms as they continue investigating the source of the poisoning.

According to KWS veterinarians, the elephants first began showing signs of weakness before collapsing. Many displayed paralysis in their front limbs, labored breathing, and severe damage to their lungs and heart. Several adult females and calves exhibited similar symptoms before dying.

One herd in Kimana Wildlife Sanctuary was especially hard hit, losing six elephants in rapid succession. During post-mortem examinations, KWS veterinarians found tomatoes in the stomach contents of one elephant, leading officials to examine nearby agricultural fields as a possible source of exposure.

In an interview with Citizen TV Kenya, KWS Director General Prof. Erastus Kanga said:

“Cyanide is a highly toxic chemical, particularly for elephants. If elephants consume cyanide, they cannot survive a day or two.”

Prof. Kanga also warned that the incident could have broader consequences beyond wildlife.

“Other than the elephants and the wildlife that may be feeding in those fields, we have the local livestock. We have the goats. We have the cattle that are there. Eventually, if this cyanide is truly the one that is in the system, then we are going to see a bigger impact.”

KWS officials said the immediate risk has been contained but are urging communities living around Amboseli National Park and neighboring wildlife areas to remain vigilant and exercise caution when using agricultural chemicals.

The agency also stated that the toxic substances detected in the deceased elephants do not currently pose a threat to human health. In the meantime, wildlife rangers and researchers continue closely monitoring elephant herds throughout the Amboseli ecosystem as additional laboratory results are analyzed and the investigation continues.

The loss of 15 elephants has raised serious concerns about the growing risks wildlife face where agricultural activity overlaps with critical elephant habitat. As the Kenya Wildlife Service continues its investigation, officials and conservation organizations hope the findings will help prevent future tragedies and strengthen protections for one of Africa’s most iconic elephant populations.
