Magnitude 6.7 Earthquake Strikes Peru, Injuring Three & Damaging Homes

A powerful 6.7-magnitude earthquake shook Peru on Thursday, August 20, 2026, causing damage in communities across the Ayacucho Region.

According to the latest reviewed data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck at approximately 1:00 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located 31 kilometers northwest of Aniso, Peru. The quake occurred at a depth of 99 kilometers.

Residents in parts of Ayacucho were seen rushing into the streets as the earthquake hit, while communities across the region began assessing the impact.

Officials reported that three people were injured and more than 40 homes were affected, with some left uninhabitable and at least one destroyed. Schools and healthcare facilities were also impacted. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported.

Multiple aftershocks were recorded in the hours following the earthquake as emergency officials continued monitoring affected areas.

For animals, earthquakes can be especially frightening and disorienting. Companion animals may react suddenly to the shaking and attempt to escape, while farm animals and wildlife can also be affected by changes to their environment, leaving them vulnerable to separation, injury, or displacement.

World Animal News and Peace 4 Animals urge families in disaster-prone areas to include their animals in every emergency plan. Keep carriers, leashes, food, water, medications, and up-to-date identification readily accessible, and always bring animals to safety during a disaster.

Wildlife may also become displaced from their habitat or appear in unexpected areas. If you encounter an injured or distressed wild animal, contact a local wildlife rescue or emergency service.

Our hearts and prayers are with everyone affected by this powerful earthquake, including the animals and wildlife throughout Peru.
