In a heartbreaking tragedy, an estimated 45 to 60 cows lost their lives after a tractor-trailer overturned and plunged from a highway overpass in Kansas City, Missouri, on Sunday, October 18. Dozens of surviving cows escaped onto surrounding roadways, raising concerns about their injuries, well-being, and future.

According to information from the Kansas City Police Department, the accident occurred shortly before 3:00 a.m. when a tractor-trailer transporting approximately 120 to 130 cows overturned on Interstate 70 and fell onto Interstate 35 below, striking another vehicle. Both drivers were injured and transported to hospitals.

Some of the surviving cows wandered into nearby neighborhoods, with several reportedly traveling miles from the crash site.

According to the Kansas City Fire Department, emergency personnel used drones to help locate the frightened animals. A recovery team was also dispatched to help secure the surviving cows.

Fire officials reported that many of the surviving animals had sustained injuries.

By Sunday afternoon, police believed all surviving cows had been accounted for. However, questions remain about their condition, whether they received veterinary treatment, where they were transported, and what their future holds.

This devastating accident underscores the risks farm animals face during transportation, including extreme distress, serious injuries, and even death. Many are transported to slaughterhouses, where they can endure further suffering and abuse before being killed for their meat.

World Animal News and Peace 4 Animals are deeply saddened by the loss of these innocent animals. Our hearts are with the surviving cows who endured this frightening ordeal. We hope they receive the veterinary care, compassion, and protection they deserve, and are given a second chance at life in an accredited sanctuary.
