Another young beluga whale has tragically lost his life in captivity. Cyprus, a 9-year-old beluga who was transferred from Marineland Canada to SeaWorld San Diego less than two months ago, has died, becoming the sixth beluga to lose his life following the recent transfers.
Cyprus died on Sunday, October 18, after being relocated from the now-closed Marineland facility in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.
According to SeaWorld, Cyprus stopped eating on Friday, October 16, and an ultrasound revealed a potentially life-threatening intestinal condition. Despite receiving veterinary care, the young whale did not survive.
The deaths of six beluga whales following their transfers from Marineland raise serious concerns about the physical and psychological well-being of the surviving whales, as well as their future in captivity.
Beluga whales are highly intelligent, social animals who naturally inhabit Arctic and sub-Arctic waters. In the wild, they travel long distances, communicate through complex vocalizations, and maintain strong social bonds. No artificial enclosure can fully replicate the freedom, space, and natural environment these magnificent animals need.
World Animal News and Peace 4 Animals are heartbroken by the loss of Cyprus and the other Marineland belugas who have recently died. We urge greater transparency and accountability, and hope that the surviving belugas will one day have the opportunity to live in a safe, protected seaside sanctuary, free from exploitation and human entertainment.
These beautiful animals deserve a future defined by compassion, dignity, and freedom, not confinement.
