the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia

Incredible news as a critically endangered Sumatran rhino calf was born at the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary, Way Kambas National Park (SRS TNWK), in Lampung Province, on Thursday, March 24th.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, Rosa, the mother of the newborn calf was pregnant from December 2020 to March 2022.

The entire process of giving birth, as well as the subsequent health of the mother and baby afterwards was supervised by a team of SRS TNWK veterinarians from the Indonesian Badak Foundation (YABI).

The Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Wiratno noted that the birth of Rosa’s calf increased the number of rhinos in the TNWK SRS to eight.

The Sumatran rhino is classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Sadly, numerous threats, including poaching and habitat loss, have brought them to the brink of extinction.

There are believed to be less than 80 Sumatran rhinos left in the wild, living in small, isolated populations on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Borneo.

Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya, shared that he appreciates the steps and field leadership of Wiratno, who continues to be committed to maintaining and sustainably managing biodiversity, for national and world interests, now and in the future.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry through the Directorate General of KSDAE continuously strives to maintain the habitat and biodiversity of wildlife in Indonesia.
