Uganda Wildlife Authority Mourns The Death Of Pte Olara Jonathan Who Was Tragically Killed By Poachers

It is with profound sorrow that the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) announces the untimely death of Pte Olara Jonathan, a dedicated member of the UWA team stationed in Kidepo Valley Conservation Area (KVCA).

Pte Olara was fatally shot on November 4th, 2024, during an encounter with armed poachers while patrolling within the Karenga Community Wildlife Area. His unwavering courage and commitment to protecting Uganda’s wildlife will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

“As we mourn this tremendous loss, our thoughts and prayers are with Pte Olara Jonathan’s family and loved ones. We extend our heartfelt condolences to them during this profoundly difficult time and are committed to providing his family with the support they need in the wake of this tragedy,” said UWA in a statement. 

UWA’s mission is to conserve and protect Uganda’s wildlife resources, which are national treasures. The daily risks faced by the staff in the field, particularly in areas prone to illegal wildlife activities, highlight the critical role UWA plays in safeguarding these precious resources. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers involved in conservation work and the bravery of the men and women who risk their lives to defend our wildlife and natural heritage.

“It is deeply saddening to hear that Private Olara Jonathan has fallen in the line of duty. May he rest in peace,” Mike Veale, Founder and CEO of Global Conservation Force, told WAN. “This is yet another stark reminder that the international community must play a more active role in reducing demand, supporting rangers, and bolstering conservation efforts. I would like to extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.”

“In honor of Pte Olara Jonathan’s memory, we pledge to redouble our efforts in combating poaching and other illegal activities that threaten Uganda’s wildlife and ecosystems. We remain resolute in our commitment to protecting our conservation areas and will continue to work closely with local communities, government authorities, and conservation partners to preserve wildlife and the integrity of its habitats for the benefit of all Ugandans,” continued UWA in a statement.

UWA is currently working with other security agencies to follow up on the perpetrators of this heinous crime, with the aim of bringing them to justice.

“We urge all Ugandans to stand united against poaching and wildlife crime. Together, we can create a future where Uganda’s wildlife thrives, free from the threats of illegal activities,” concluded UWA.
