Victory! Saks Fifth Avenue Joins The Growing Number Of High Fashion Brands That Are Going Fur-Free!

Saks Fifth Avenue has committed to stop selling products made of animal fur by the end of 2022. This includes both brand partner and private label merchandise sold online and in stores.

“Across the Saks Fifth Avenue experience, we evaluate a number of factors when making decisions about our assortment, including customer preferences and societal shifts,” said Tracy Margolies, Chief Merchandising Officer with Saks, in a statement. “We recognize that trends constantly evolve, and that the sale of fur remains a significant social issue. As such, eliminating it from our assortment is the right step for us to take at this time.”

With this decision, Saks Fifth Avenue will eliminate the sale of products made from animals that were raised for the use of their fur or those made with fur from wild animals. Sadly, shearling, goatskin, cattle hide, down, feathers, and leather products will continue to be sold online and in stores.

Saks Fifth Avenue plans to close all of its fur salons by the end of 2021. The luxury retailer will also work closely with vendor partners to phase out the sale of fur products both online and in stores by the end of 2022.

WAN recently reported on the news that Alexander McQueen and Balenciaga joined the rapidly expanding group of fashion designers dropping fur, including: Prada, Gucci, Armani, VersaceMichael Kors, Jimmy Choo, DKNY, and Burberry.

Within the last several years, fur bans have been enacted in San Francisco, West Hollywood, and Los Angeles. In October 2019, In Defense of Animals and its allies celebrated a ground-breaking victory when California became the first state in the country to ban fur sales and fur trapping.

In the UK, Humane Society International has been working tirelessly to ban fur sales with its #FurFreeBritain campaign.

Help urge the UK government to establish a sales ban that includes the pelts of all animals killed for their fur HERE!
