Another Colorado Wolf Found Dead In Wyoming: A Tragedy For Wolf Reintroduction

We are saddened to report that Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has confirmed the death of female gray wolf 2304, one of the wolves translocated from Oregon to Colorado as part of the state’s wolf restoration program. CPW was made aware of her mortality on July 24, 2025, in Wyoming.

Although CPW has coordinated with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department for the return of 2304’s tracking collar, state law in Wyoming prevents further details from being shared. At this time, no additional information is available.

Every wolf death is a significant blow to their ongoing recovery efforts. Each individual plays a critical role in the success of reestablishing a stable and thriving wolf population in Colorado. Wolves often travel long distances in search of food or a mate, sometimes crossing state lines.

The loss of 2304 underscores the broader plight of gray wolves in the United States. After decades of near eradication, these iconic animals remain under threat from habitat fragmentation, human conflict, and insufficient protections. Colorado’s wolf reintroduction efforts are a vital step in restoring ecological balance, but the state of wolves remains fragile.

We must continue to fight for the protection of gray wolves, not just in Colorado, but throughout the United States. Their survival depends on strong conservation policies, cross-state cooperation, and public willingness to defend their right to exist.
