Beloved K-9 Santi Dies After Being Startled By Illegal Fireworks And Struck By A Vehicle On July 4

A Fourth of July celebration turned to heartbreak after illegal fireworks startled a beloved law enforcement K-9, sending him into the path of a moving vehicle, where he was fatally struck.

Santi, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois who served with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office for the past four years, tragically lost his life after being overcome by fear when illegal fireworks erupted near his home. His heartbreaking death is a powerful reminder of the devastating impact fireworks can have on animals.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement:

“An off-duty Fresno County Sheriff’s deputy was home Saturday night with his assigned K-9 partner Santi. He was keeping the dog inside the house due to the disruption of illegal fireworks being set off in the area.

“Around 8:30 pm, the deputy let Santi into the backyard to go pee. During this time, an aerial mortar exploded nearby, startling Santi, causing him to run toward the fence, which he completely jumped over.”

The deputy immediately ran after Santi, but the continued sound of fireworks caused the frightened K-9 to keep running. Santi was ultimately found badly injured on the road near Shaw and Helm Avenues in Clovis after being struck by a vehicle. He was taken to a veterinary hospital, where he later died.

According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, the driver did not stop and left the scene. Clovis Police interviewed several witnesses and continue to investigate the hit-and-run. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Clovis Police Department at (559) 324-2800.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office also highlighted the dangers posed by illegal fireworks, noting that they can spark fires, cause serious injuries, create immense distress for animals, and disrupt entire communities. Despite repeated warnings from law enforcement and firefighters each year, illegal fireworks continue to place both people and animals at risk.

World Animal News hopes this tragedy will help raise greater awareness of the serious impact fireworks can have on animals. Every year, countless dogs and cats are terrified by the deafening explosions, fleeing from their homes and yards in panic. Many are never reunited with their families, while others suffer devastating injuries or lose their lives.

Wildlife is also profoundly affected. Birds can abandon nests, become disoriented during flight, or collide with buildings. Deer, foxes, rabbits, and countless other wild animals often flee into roads in a desperate attempt to escape the relentless noise. Horses and farm animals can also panic, sometimes suffering severe injuries while trying to flee confined spaces.

As communities celebrate the Fourth of July, we must also remember those who experience these festivities very differently. May Santi’s tragic death create greater awareness, strengthen our compassion for all living beings, and renew our commitment to protecting the animals who share our neighborhoods and our natural world.

Santi’s service, loyalty, and sacrifice will not be forgotten!
