10 People Charged In Major Sea Turtle Poaching & Illegal Fishing Operation In Florida
Ten people have been charged following a four-year undercover investigation into an alleged illegal commercial fishing and sea turtle poaching operation in Florida.
Investigators allege the group illegally harvested approximately 23,000 pounds of fish and made more than $150,000 through the illegal sale of fish, shrimp, and protected sea turtles. Authorities say the defendants attempted to avoid reporting requirements by conducting sales at night, from private residences, and through exchanges on the water.
Three defendants are accused of capturing protected sea turtles and illegally selling five of them, three adults and two hatchlings, to undercover officers.
All 10 defendants face multiple criminal charges, including racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering. Several also face charges related to the unlawful possession or sale of marine turtles.
Sea turtles are protected under both Florida and federal law, which prohibit their capture, possession, sale, harassment, or harm.
Strong wildlife law enforcement and accountability are critical to protecting sea turtles and other marine wildlife from poaching and illegal trade.
