Nearly two weeks after escaping from a private ranch in the Texas Hill Country, Gracie the giraffe remains missing as an extensive search effort continues.

Despite reports circulating online claiming that Gracie had been found safe, World Animal News (WAN) has confirmed that the giraffe remains missing.

WAN spoke with the Real County Sheriff’s Office in Leakey, Texas, which confirmed that efforts to locate Gracie are still underway. Authorities continue to investigate reported sightings and are asking the public to come forward with any information that could help locate her.

Gracie escaped from Cedar Hollow Ranch in the Texas Hill Country, prompting a large-scale search involving local residents, ranchers, law enforcement, helicopters, drones, and trail cameras. Although there have been multiple reported sightings, Gracie has not yet been found.

According to reports, the ranch’s other giraffes remained in familiar areas of the property while Gracie reportedly ventured into rocky hillsides and areas they had not explored. After moving through unfamiliar territory, she reportedly ended up on the wrong side of a gate before wandering away from the ranch.

Reports indicate that the search for Gracie continues to face challenges due to the expansive landscape surrounding the ranch and the need to gain access to neighboring properties.

Gracie’s owner is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to her safe recovery.

World Animal News hopes that Gracie will be found safe and unharmed. Her story also serves as a reminder that wild animals have unique needs that are closely tied to the environments where their species evolved over thousands of years.

Although parts of the Texas Hill Country may share some characteristics with certain landscapes found in Africa, giraffes evolved within complex ecosystems that extend far beyond terrain alone. Their native habitats include specific vegetation, climate conditions, wildlife interactions, and migration patterns that have shaped the species for generations.

World Animal News believes wild animals are not here for human entertainment, tourist attractions, or private collections. They are highly specialized species whose physical, behavioral, and social needs are best met in environments that reflect the natural habitats of their ancestors.

While Gracie’s immediate safety remains the priority, her story is a reminder that wild animals remain wild. Their instincts and behaviors remain deeply connected to the ecosystems in which they evolved. Gracie’s story underscores the importance of putting animal welfare, conservation, and species-specific needs at the forefront of decisions involving non-native wildlife.

For now, search teams remain focused on finding Gracie and ensuring her safe recovery.

Anyone who sees Gracie is urged not to approach her and to immediately contact the Real County Sheriff’s Office at 830-232-5201. Every credible sighting could help search and rescue teams locate her and ensure her safe recovery.

WAN will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
