Victory For Wildlife: France Moves To End Trophy Hunting Imports

In a major victory for wildlife, France has committed to ending the import of hunting trophies from protected species, marking a historic step toward protecting some of the world’s most iconic and vulnerable animals.

The French government announced its commitment to prohibit the import of hunting trophies from protected species as part of broader efforts to strengthen biodiversity conservation. The proposal also calls for France to support similar protections across the European Union.

According to the French National Assembly, the proposed legislation would prohibit both the import and export of hunting trophies from protected species. Lawmakers also noted that France has been one of Europe’s largest importers of hunting trophies from protected species in recent years, making the measure an important milestone for wildlife conservation.

If enacted, the measure would help protect threatened wildlife commonly targeted by trophy hunters, such as elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, hippos, and other protected species.

According to Humane World for Animals, the progress follows more than three years of coordinated advocacy by Humane World for Animals Europe, working alongside Convergence Animaux Politique (CAP) and other animal protection organizations to push for stronger restrictions on trophy hunting imports in France.

Humane World for Animals stated:

“Wild animals belong in the wild, not on walls as trophies.”

If enacted, France’s commitment would mark another significant step toward reducing the international trade in hunting trophies and strengthening protections for wildlife around the world.
