In honor of International Wolf Day, World Animal News is sharing the official trailer for Protectors of the Wild, Peace 4 Animals’ newest documentary highlighting the urgent need to protect wolves across North America.

Wolves are sentient, highly social animals that live in close-knit family groups. They communicate, cooperate, and care for one another. As a keystone species, they also help keep the ecosystems they inhabit healthy and balanced.

The remarkable impact wolves have on nature can be seen in Yellowstone National Park. Since their reintroduction, wolves have helped restore natural predator-prey relationships, provided food for scavengers, and contributed to the recovery of vegetation in parts of the park.

For generations, fear and harmful misinformation have fueled the relentless persecution of wolves. Government-led eradication campaigns eliminated them from much of their historic range, and despite recovery efforts in some areas, these majestic animals continue to face serious threats.

In the United States, protections remain divided. Gray wolves are protected under the Endangered Species Act in the contiguous United States, except for the Northern Rocky Mountain population. They are listed as threatened in Minnesota and endangered in the remaining federally protected areas.

Wolves in the Northern Rocky Mountain region remain under state control, leaving them vulnerable to state-authorized hunting and trapping. Idaho and Montana both permit wolf hunting and trapping, while across much of Wyoming, wolves may be killed year-round without a license.

Protections elsewhere are also at risk. H.R. 845, the Pet and Livestock Protection Act, passed the U.S. House in December 2025 and is now before a Senate committee. If enacted, it would reinstate a 2020 rule removing most gray wolves in the lower 48 states from the federal list of endangered and threatened species. It would also bar judicial review of the reissued rule. The full bill can be viewed HERE.

Through powerful storytelling, Protectors of the Wild exposes the threats facing wolves, dispels the damaging myths surrounding them, and calls for compassion and coexistence. The film envisions a future in which these intelligent, deeply social animals are protected and free to thrive in the wild.
