84% Of People In Scotland Support Ban On Cruel Farrowing Crates For Mother Pigs

A new poll has revealed that 84% of people in Scotland oppose the use of farrowing crates—small metal enclosures that confine mother pigs for up to five weeks when they give birth. These crates are so restrictive that the pigs can’t even turn around, causing them physical pain and extreme stress.

The poll, conducted by The Diffley Partnership for Humane World for Animals UK, showed that most people want these cruel crates banned. More than 58% of respondents said they should be banned immediately, while another 26% supported phasing them out within five years. Only 6% thought they should continue to be used. Support for a ban was strong across all demographics, with 88% of people ages 16 to 34 years old being the most supportive.

“Mother pigs locked up in farrowing crates endure the most restrictive confinement of any farmed animals in the UK, and these intelligent and sensitive animals very clearly suffer physically and mentally,” said Claire Bass, senior director of campaigns and public affairs at Humane World for Animals UK.

“There is no social licence for this caged cruelty to continue, so we urge the Scottish Government to bring forward the promised consultation and support on a swift pathway to crate-free farming,” continued Bass.

Over 200,000 mother pigs in the UK spend about a quarter of their lives trapped in these cages. The extreme confinement leads to severe distress and painful injuries, as the pigs rub against the metal bars. Farmers use the crates to prevent piglets from being accidentally crushed, but there are better alternatives—such as farrowing pens—that allow mother pigs to move freely while still keeping their piglets safe.

In 2021, the Scottish Government promised to consult on phasing out farrowing crates, but so far, nothing has happened. The poll results were shared at a Scottish Parliament event on January 23rd, where politicians from multiple parties discussed the urgent need to ban these cages.

Scotland has a clear choice: continue allowing this outdated, cruel practice, or take action to ban it. The public has spoken—it’s time to free mother pigs from a life of suffering.

While banning farrowing crates is a crucial step for animal welfare, the most compassionate and sustainable choice is to avoid animal products altogether.

Adopting a plant-based diet not only spares mother pigs from suffering but also benefits the environment by reducing deforestation, water use, and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, plant-based foods can lower the risk of heart disease, cancer, and other health issues. Choosing plant-based options is a win for animals, the planet, and our health.

You can help all animals and our planet by choosing compassion on your plate and in your glass. #GoVeg
