How A Simple Hello From A Kind Stranger Helped A Homeless Man & His Dog Start A New Life Off The Streets

There are times when you come across people who completely restore your faith in humanity. Such as the case when we met Thomas, Shaun, and Mihn. Thomas, an entertainment lawyer, was at Costco in Southern California one afternoon and spotted a homeless man and his dog sitting outside the store. Something was telling Thomas to go over to the man and speak with him, well, thank goodness he did.

The kind man, named Shaun Donnelly, and his sweet dog Sandy, were trying to keep warm when Thomas approached them. Everything began to unravel when Thomas knew he had to do something to get Shaun and Sandy off the streets. The first thing that Thomas did was create a GofundMe page to help raise funds to purchase a shelter for Shaun and Sandy, so they didn’t have to sleep another night out in the cold.

Thomas did some research to try to find a homeless shelter that would allow dogs, however, he was worried that Shaun and Sandy would somehow be separated since most shelters do not allow pets.

“Shaun is such a sweet man with a kind heart. He loves his dog Sandy so much and she’s such a sweet dog,” Thomas told WAN while expressing his decision as to why he had to help them both.

As Thomas’ GoFundMe page began picking up momentum and being shared across the country, Mihn Collins, a film director, saw his post and wanted to help. Mihn had a production RV that he knew would be perfect for Shaun and Sandy. Not only did he help to provide an RV for them, he also included two solar generators for electricity.

Thomas and Mihn worked together to make sure that Shaun and Sandy were comfortable in their new RV and that they had everything they needed. At last, Shaun and Sandy finally had a warm bed to sleep in.

“There is so much more work to do,” Thomas told WAN. He further explained that this was just the first step. He wanted to help Shaun get back on his feet since he was so eager to work again.

“I’ve never been one to just sit around and take advantage of the system. I fell onto some hard times, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me from taking care of my dog, because I know I wouldn’t be here without Sandy, she saved my life,” Shaun told WAN.

Shaun explained that he had made some mistakes in his life and that he has suffered through hard times after losing many family members, including his dog Rocky, who was stolen from him last year. “Rocky was my world. I loved that dog so much and I was so broken when she was taken from me one night,” continued an emotional Shaun. “One thing after another, I couldn’t take it anymore, but Sandy was there for me and I have her to thank as the reason why I’m still here.”

“I can’t say enough about Thomas and Mihn. They are the kindest people that I have ever met in my life. My brothers, I call them my brothers now, they went above and beyond, and I don’t know anyone who would do what they did for me. I thank them so much for what they did,” continued Shaun.

When we asked Thomas what his biggest take away was from his incredible gesture of kindness, he said, “it just takes a second out of your day to stop to say hi to someone. You never know what will unfold.”
